City of Meridian: Health District Strategic Development Presentation
In 2015, the National Resource Network supported the City of Meridian, Mississippi, to develop a strategic redevelopment plan for the Downtown Medical District surrounding two regional hospitals. Healthcare represented Meridian’s strongest employment sector and fastest growing industry, and the city sought opportunities to capitalize on its strength. The city had already experienced significant investment in its downtown, including a new Mississippi State University campus and performing arts centers, and renovation of two historic buildings. The Network partnered with the city to develop a strategic plan and framework for the redevelopment of the blocks between downtown and the hospitals. The plan built on market analysis and best practices from across the country.
The Network partnered with the city and stakeholder institutions to develop a vision for a Health District. The Network conducted market analysis to determine development feasibility and opportunities for city investment to support additional market activity. It also researched best practices from case studies of health districts in comparable cities across the United States and made recommendations for an implementation plan and potential sources of funding.
The strategic redevelopment plan organized a framework around four interrelated concepts:
- Connecting the health district to downtown
- Enhancing priority corridors and streetscapes in downtown
- Supporting residential infill development
- Adding a signature public space to the health district
Since its completion, City of Meridian officials have stated that the National Resource Network framework and redevelopment plan is the primary catalyst for sparking downtown projects, such as the Courtyard by Marriott-Threefoot Hotel Development, the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (MAEX), and the City Hall Park Project.
The Network’s engagement team in Meridian was led by Network consortium member HR&A Advisors, and subconsultant Perkins + Will.
